Hi Jeremy, this is really nice article! I'm almost in the same position as You. I'm into design for about 2+ years and I see absolutely the same differences in my world. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one :)

Hi! Nice article, I feel the same way, I just started with my design business and I don't have much free time, even though I don't have more than a couple of clients... Would you give me some suggestions on how to attract customers? Did you invest a lot on advertising when first started?

Thanks!

Great post Jeremy. Although deadly steadfast against your initial adoration of the Comic Sans, I could relate. A whole new world to entice the senses open up.

You are officially added to my Feed!
Cheers!

It's like I wrote this post! Awesome. One thing I don't like about being a graphic designer is that my friends intentionally use Comic Sans just to bug me.

Thanks for your comment. The Adobe Suite has been doing a number on my other computer activities lately because I keep trying to hit the spacebar to move the screen around for everything lately.

For the most part people were very kind in regards to this post, the only real reason all the negativity came through was that somehow the stars aligned and the post made it the the frontpage of Digg, which is essentially a breeding ground for negative types.

I have only recently gotten into photography and that particular annoytance with the tilted photos hasn’t gotten to me yet. Although I really want to scream at people whooo are using their flash for photos taken 300 miles away from their subject.

Hi Jeremy,

Kudos on a light-hearted, fun post. I think many senior year design students would agree with most of your comments - I've heard similar things from them. The world looks completely different after a few years of design classes!! I've been designing for a long time, so it's just ingrained in me now, and I don't think anything of the fact that I critique everything I see. I was a design instructor for many years - so I may even be more anal than the average designer :) Just wait until you start trying to Control-Z life! Then you know it's time to take a break from the computer!

I really respect that you're exploring the design feild and have taken the time to share your experiences in a blog. Way to go, and keep up the good work!

I was surprised to see so much negativity in the comments. Designers are usually friendly and welcoming. Please don't assume we are like any of these negative commenters. That’s the danger in blogging. It gives the angry people a public outlet.

For those who seem insistent on "calling you out" by mentioning that your blog is based on a template, I'd like to point out that MANY design blogs are based on a template. Did it ever occur to you that Jeremy is a PRINT designer? Or that Jeremy is an expert in XHTML and CSS, but has not mastered the PHP necessary to build a blog yet? Let's lay off Jeremy. Blogs are about the writing - the design is just eye-candy. This post could have been posted as a pdf and it would have been just as entertaining. Thanks Jeremy!

Hilarious article! But still, very true indeed. After stepping into the design world I find myself doing things different. Just like what you've mentioned, I check out the typeface of movie poster more often than not. I'd frown if it's Trajan or any typeface somewhat similar to the "movie font". When I see Giddyups I give out a good chuckle, and when I see Comic Sans MS I frown, roll my eyes and immediately start this self-righteous crusade to my nearest friend about what makes it so bad to use it.

I constantly check out out typography in books, poster and weirdly enough, road signs. When I go shopping, instead of focusing what to buy and ogle at, I chose to inspect the labels, tags, as well as the interior design. If I see Comic Sans MS again, I let out a muted scream.

When I stumble upon websites, I'd spend more time than before going through it. If I see features that I really adore, I immediately pull out the Firebug tab and start poking my way through the code. I disable styles and see how they work.

Ah, and after I ventured into photography, I find myself very, very allergic to tilted photos. The way I hold my camera gives my photo precisely a one-degree (sometimes 1.5 degree) tilt, and I always make it a point to edit all my photos even if I know they're going to be on Facebook (where people don't care about all those rules, contrast, saturation and etc).

Thanks again for the wonderful post :) made my Monday morning (yea, 2am here).

i find now my shopping experience has been ruined as i don't look at the clothes anymore, I find myself wondering how that gondola was made, what finish they have used or why the cash desk is out of sync with the flow of the shop.. shopping has been ruined by working in retail. :(
